At an altitude of 1,274 meters above sea level, embedded by the enormous mountain panoramas of the Jungfrau region and about 400 meters above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Wengen blends into the Bernese Alpine world.
Since 1893, the small mountain village at the foot of the Jungfrau peak has been best reached from Lauterbrunnen by the Wengernalp Railway. With no connection to the road network, car-free Wengen offers a very special relaxation and release from everyday life. Relax in the most beautiful hotels in Wengen and enjoy regional specialties and international highlights in the various restaurants.
The "Village of the Jungfrau" belongs to the municipality of Lauterbrunnen and is the largest village in the municipality in terms of the population of about 1,300 inhabitants. In the summer high season, up to 5,000 inhabitants can be found in Wengen at times to visit the Bernese Oberland vacation region. In the winter high season, especially during the time of the international Lauberhorn race (FIS Ski World Cup), the tranquil village is home to up to 10,000 visitors from all over the world.
Wengen is especially famous for its churches. The village has a beautiful reformed church, which was built in 1953 and is now a listed building. In addition, there is also an English and a Roman Catholic church in Wengen, which leave a lasting impression.
Wengen belongs to the Jungfrau Region Tourism Association, which also includes the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Jungfrau-Aletsch.
